The cattle industry is a top development priority for Xiengkhouang Province, presenting a significant opportunity for economic growth driven by high market
demand from both domestic consumers and export markets in Vietnam and China. However, the sector's potential is constrained by several key challenges. This policy brief, drawing on findings from the NAFRI report, "Cattle Value Chains and Cattle Production in Argoecological Principles,
" outlines these challenges and proposes actionable policy recommendations. The core issues identified include seasonal feed shortages,
prevalent animal diseases, inconsistent value chain linkages, and gaps in technical knowledge and financial access. Addressing these issues through a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach focused on agroecological principles will unlock the value chain's potential, improve farmer livelihoods, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
