This report, prepared by Forest Trends, evaluates eight widely used technology tools in Vietnam for collecting farm plot geolocation and farmer data to support compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) before its implementation deadline at the end of 2026. Based on eight key assessment criteria, the report finds that while all tools have potential, Open Foris Ground, QField, and KoboCollect are the most suitable options for local authorities with limited financial and human resources due to their open-source nature and low cost. However, the report warns that none of the tools fully meets Vietnam’s cybersecurity and personal data protection requirements under their default configurations, as foreign software typically stores data on overseas servers, while domestic software often lacks transparent security information. The report therefore recommends a two-phase approach: first using free open-source tools to establish baseline databases, then investing in domestic server infrastructure and customizing the tools to ensure long-term data security.
