Innovative Youth-Led Rice Farming: Transitioning from Traditional Practices to Modern Techniques

This document details how Mr. Chheang Chheat, a 20-year-old farmer from Prey Veng province, successfully transitioned his family’s rain-fed farm from traditional direct seeding to modern agroecological practices. Facing rising chemical costs, weed infestations, and severe climate shocks, Chheat joined the Baphom Meachey Agricultural Cooperative (BMAC). Supported by the FCFD and the APFP-FO4A project, he adopted mechanical transplanting and entered a contract farming agreement. This shift nearly doubled his rice yields, lowered production costs, secured premium pricing, and inspired him to invest in his own machinery to serve neighboring farms.
